Hi Folks,
I think part of leading a frugal lifestyle is about pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone occasionally. I have recently built a chicken coop, or chicken tractor, since mine is on wheels. I was able to build this coop on the cheap using recycled wood from an old shack that was on my property. So once again, though this is an unproven frugal project I have very little funds tied up in this effort, mostly just time. Full disclosure, this particular project may not save money, it could even cost me some extra money, I mean come on eggs are pretty cheap these days.
So if this may actually add an expense to a cheap food what the hell am I doing this for? Well, I like the idea of having a food source that I control. I’ve never kept chickens before and am a little hesitant, but I’m pushing myself on this particular project. I have also been doing research on how to humanely kill, pluck, and breast my chickens after they quit laying eggs. So I plan on using the chicken entirely. There are also some added benefits to keeping chickens, their feces will help fertilize my garden. They are good about eating bugs and ticks which will hopefully annoy me and my dog less this summer. Farm fresh eggs are also more nutritious than store bought eggs. So these are the reasons I’m starting this project. My home is located just outside of city limits so I don’t have any city regulations bogging me down, you should check your local ordinances about keeping chickens. I will not actually be keeping chickens until I’m finished with my upcoming conference travels. So I will update this post sometime in late March or April.
