The Amazing $30 Electric Bill!

I’ve really impressed myself this month.  I received my electric bill in the mail this month as I usually do and I assume you do.  When I opened my bill this month I was shocked at the total.

So how do we get to a $30 dollar electric bill and how can we get this bill down to a lower amount?  I’d say the biggest thing that I’ve done this month is shut off the air conditioner.  I sweat like a hog, so shutting down the A/C during a month when temps are still at 85 degrees was a sacrifice for me.  However, it started cooling off more in the evenings to the point where I could open the windows at night cool off the house and trap the cool air in the morning and make it last the rest of the day.  I just moved into my house and one of my first projects was replacing all of my light bulbs with LED lights.  I also have not used my dryer since moving in, clotheslines are amazing!

All these things have helped keep my bill very low.  I’m happy, but we can always do better.  My first plan is to start adding more insulation to my attic.  Check the R-value that’s necessary for where you live and make sure you have that and then some in your attic.  I have the recommended amount in my attic, but I plan on almost doubling this to see what improvements can be made for next summer.  ***Bonus points, I have a binder where I keep my old electric bills so I can compare month to month progress and now I will be comparing month to month from the year before***

I also plan on installing a thermo blanket for my hot water heater.  At Lowes they are selling for $20 right now.  I’m going to try and wait to get one on sale, black Friday is coming up, and then install it.  This helps keep the heat in the hot water heater tank and hopefully results in it heating up the water less often and saving you money.

I should have posted this 3 years ago when I did it in Oklahoma, my bad
