One of my best savings in my budget that comes from increased independence, a new learned skill, and frugality come from my Hair Clippers.  Ok.  Truth be told this frugal habit was forced on me by basic biology, I’m bald.  When I was an undergraduate my roommates sister had a brain tumor that needed to be operated on.  The surgery required that some of her hair be shaved for surgery.  My roomate and I, along with several other friends, all shaved our heads in support of her.  It was around this time that I realized I didn’t have enough hair left to let my hair grow back out again.  At this point I realized I would need to sport a very short hair cut, I had the good fashion sense to avoid rocking a comb-over or the cul-de-sac.  The savings of cutting my own hair have been tremendous.

When I had hair it grew pretty fast, I required a haircut every 3 weeks.  In my youth I was worse at money than I am now and spent 18 dollars per hair cut.  I have been cutting my own hair for the last 8 years now.

Expense of continued hair cuts 52 weeks per year / 3 =  17.3  I’m rounding this down to 17 for round numbers sake and to not tax my poor math skills any more than necessary.  So that’s 17 haircuts a year * 18 dollars a cut = $306 dollars a year spent on hair cuts * 8 years I’ve been cutting my own hair $2,448 dollars that I would have spent.  That is considerable savings and one hell of a return on my initial $20 dollar investment.  These clippers continue to work amazingly well.  The best news is that these savings will continue to grow throughout the rest of my lifetime.  I’m less than thrilled about going bald but it has forced some pretty awesome savings on me.  I realize many of you, maybe most, are not bald but the fact of the matter is any guy can sport a buzz cut hair style and with a little extra effort can learn to cut his/her own hair, it’s not rocket science.
